Step Into Elwyn’s History During Archives Month

For nearly 175 years, Elwyn has been part of the evolving story of disability services, education, behavioral health, and community support in the United States. This October, visitors will have a special opportunity to explore that history firsthand.
In recognition of Archives Month Philly, the Elwyn Archives will open its doors to visitors throughout October, offering a closer look at the photographs, documents, artifacts, and stories that preserve Elwyn’s history from its founding in 1852 through today.
Elwyn Archivist Caitlin Angelone will welcome visitors to the archives on October 6, 13, 20, and 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment or registration is required.
Visitors can explore materials that tell the story of the people, programs, ideas, and milestones that have shaped Elwyn across generations. The collection also provides a window into the broader history of services and opportunities for people with disabilities and how they have changed over time.
Bringing Elwyn’s History to Life
The archives do more than preserve the past. They help connect Elwyn’s history with the organization we know today.
Historic photographs, correspondence, publications, records, and artifacts document how Elwyn has grown and evolved while remaining connected to its longstanding mission of supporting people with disabilities and behavioral health needs.
October also provides an opportunity to bring some of those stories to a wider audience. On October 14, Elwyn will recognize Ask an Archivist Day on Instagram, where Caitlin will answer questions and share highlights from the collection.
Looking Toward 175 Years
The opportunity to explore Elwyn’s history is especially meaningful as the organization approaches its 175th anniversary in 2027.
Elwyn’s archives help preserve not only the organization’s history, but also important pieces of disability history. Together, these materials provide a connection between where Elwyn began, how services and perspectives have evolved, and the people whose experiences have shaped the organization along the way.
Throughout the coming year, Elwyn will continue to draw upon its archives as it prepares to commemorate this significant milestone and share stories from across its history.
