Mental Health Awareness: Turning Awareness into Action

Thứ Ba, 1 Tháng 9 2026

October brings increased attention to mental health through national awareness efforts focused on education, understanding, screening, and support. It is a time to talk more openly about mental health, recognize when someone may need help, and make sure people know where to turn for care.

It is also an important reminder that mental health is part of our overall health at every age.

Why Awareness Matters

Mental health challenges can affect how we feel, think, connect with others, and handle everyday life. The signs are not always easy to recognize. Changes in mood, sleep, behavior, relationships, school, work, or daily routines may be signs that someone needs support.

Talking openly about mental health can help reduce stigma and make it easier for people to ask for help. It can also help us recognize concerns sooner—in ourselves and in the people around us.

Several national observances bring added attention to these conversations throughout the month, including Mental Illness Awareness Week, October 4–10; National Depression Screening Day, October 8; World Mental Health Day, October 10; and OCD Awareness Week, October 12–18. Each offers an opportunity to learn, check in, and connect with helpful resources.

Screening Can Be a First Step

Just as we check our physical health, it is important to check our mental health.

A mental health screening is a simple tool that can help identify signs of a possible concern. It does not provide a diagnosis, but it can help someone decide if it is time to talk with a healthcare or behavioral health professional.

Screening is important at every age. Current health guidelines recommend mental and behavioral health screenings throughout childhood and adolescence, including screenings for anxiety and depression at certain ages. Finding concerns early can help children, teens, and adults connect with support sooner.

With National Depression Screening Day on October 8, now is a good time to check in with yourself or someone you care about.
